Reverend John H. Gamble Jr.'s passion for preaching is noticed by all in whom he comes in contact. He is the Pastor of the Smyrna Missionary Baptist Church of Newark, New Jersey, an itinerant preacher and bible teacher whose gift has afforded him numerous opportunities to preach in some of the largest and most prestigious churches in this country. He is a native of Jersey City, New Jersey, born December 30, 1975. He is the loving husband of Kedra N. Gamble, the proud father of two sons, John III and Justin, and the devoted son of John and Janether Gamble.
For Reverend Gamble, life in church is the only life he's ever known. His Christian journey began inside of the walls of the Jerusalem Baptist Church of Jersey City, NJ where the late Rev. H.B. Percy was pastor. It was in this place that he accepted Christ and was baptized at the age of ten. Called to ministry at the age of eighteen, he was licensed to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ on November 3, 1996 at the Greater Friendship Baptist Church, Newark, New Jersey under the leadership of Rev. John T. Teabout. He was ordained on October 1, 2000 at the New Hope Baptist Church, Newark New Jersey where Rev. Joe A. Carter is pastor. All three churches are very dear to Pastor Gamble as these were the places God used to prepare Reverend Gamble for his greatest challenge in ministry to date, the pastorate of the Smyrna Missionary Baptist Church, Newark, New Jersey.
Since becoming Smyrna's pastor in 2003, the church has grown tremendously. Its membership has doubled, its ministries have expanded, and its spirit has been renewed. The church has outgrown its current facility and is now preparing to build a new sanctuary. Pastor Gamble says, "There's no place I would rather serve than Smyrna." He loves his church and the church loves him as well.
Reverend Gamble is a graduate of Rutgers University (Bachelor of Arts in History and Africana Studies), St. Peter's College (Master of Arts in Education), and Drew University cum laude (Master of Divinity). He is currently in the process of completing his Doctor of Education degree in Educational Leadership from Seton Hall University. He is a career educator, presently serving as Principal of Marion P. Thomas Charter School in Newark, NJ and the author of the book ManHOOD: How Chriatian Brothers Can Prove They are Men.
Reverend Gamble is truly committed to the work of edifying the body of Christ and helping to reach those that are lost. His strength comes from knowing that God will never fail him. He believes God is equipping him daily to accomplish the ministry to which he has been called. He gains inspiration from the words penned by Paul to the church at Rome, "And we know all things work together for good to them that love God and are the called according to His purpose."
